Tom Clover eyes Super Sprint bid after debut success for Rogue Spirit
Monday: Beverley
Tom Clover will target Rogue Spirit at the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint following his impressive debut win in the 5f novice despite doing "plenty wrong" before the race.
The son of Dark Angel played up in the paddock and on the way to post but was on his best behaviour in the race, making all to win by three-quarters of a length and set up a possible tilt at the £200,000 contest at Newbury in July.
Clover said: "He shaped with a bit of speed through the spring, so it was nice to see him go and do that on his debut. The Super Sprint is a nice race for him to target and it'll be the plan. He's a step closer to getting there.
"He behaved quite badly beforehand, having been quite coltish. It was great to see him do it despite doing plenty wrong. You hope there's more improvement to come."
Rogue Spirit's win took Clover to a red-hot 33 per cent strike-rate in the past fortnight, with the Newmarket trainer already just 11 winners shy of last year's tally of 25.
He added: "We just hope we can keep it going as you know what the game is like, you can be going great one minute and not so great the next."
Track specialists
Mick and David Easterby took their impressive strike-rate at the track to 28 per cent with Bavardages' first success on turf in the 1m½f handicap.
