Budget-buy outsider Krypton Gold lands shock win in valuable juvenile handicap

Stuart Edmunds: 'thrilled to bits' following the success of Krypton Gold
Stuart Edmunds: 'thrilled to bits' following the success of Krypton Gold

Sunday: Ascot

Krypton Gold, a 4,000gns purchase, caused an upset when he swept to victory in the valuable 1m7½f juvenile handicap hurdle for trainer Stuart Edmunds.

The four-year-old maiden defied odds of 28-1 to come from last to first under Charlie Hammond, with 18-1 shot Great Realisation six lengths back in second.

Edmunds said: "You've always got a chance when it's a handicap. We thought we ran really well at Market Rasen last time, we split two nice Flat horses and we were clearly well treated enough to win a race.

"He's a half brother to Aspire Tower [Grade 2 winning hurdler in Ireland] but is absolutely tiny, only 15 hands. All the owners are obviously thrilled to bits, he only cost them 4,000gns."

After finishing behind Fleurman, who is rated 85 on the Flat, in his previous start in February, Krypton Gold may now return to Flat racing for the first time since joining the yard in November.

"We'll probably look at the Flat," he said. "The sensible thing to do would be to exploit his mark there of 53."

The drinks may be on the house tonight after bagging the £20,000 prize after the Buckinghamshire trainer added: "We're going to celebrate plenty tonight, one of the owners owns a pub just up the road, so we're going to head there now!"

Happy as Harry

Ascot's jump season finale proved fruitful for jockey Harry Cobden after he came away with three winners.

Chavez struck in the maiden hurdle before Cobden partnered Danny Kirwan to victory in the 2m5f handicap chase. The treble was sealed when Elegant Escape took the veterans' handicap chase. The ten-year-old was claiming his first victory since the Welsh National in 2018.
