Big day for Danny Brooke as one of Britain's youngest trainers bags first winner

A Friday trip to snowy Newcastle will be one Danny Brooke never forgets after the young trainer saddled his first winner.

The Mervyn and Jen Buckley and Brough Farm Racing-owned Melgate Majeure struck at 20-1 in division one of the 1m2f handicap for Brooke, who saddled his first runners last September.

Dual-purpose trainer Brooke, 22, took over from his mother, and now assistant trainer, Julia, last year and has 15 horses at his Middleham yard.

Brooke was narrowly denied a double when Sweet Marmalade was beaten a neck and a nose in division two, while Melgate Majeure was the first of two winners for jockey Jimmy Sullivan, who was also successful on the Ruth Carr-trained Loulin in the 5f handicap.

Brooke, whose elder brother Henry rides over jumps, said: "It's a relief and nice to get one on the board. We haven't had the cleanest of starts but hopefully the horses are really going to hit form now and do us justice.

"I was quite hopeful with Melgate Majeure and taking the cheekpieces off helped him settle early on.

"I have to thank mum for letting me take out the licence at a young age – she's still a massive part of the team and as much of the credit goes to her.

"We've had some new owners come in and it's been a case of getting to know the new horses and making our imprint."

Treble joy

Oo De Lally, a 125-1 winner on his second start at Newbury, sealed a treble for Andrew Balding in the feature 7f three-year-old handicap.

Apprentice William Carver also struck on Flyin’ High in the mile novice, while Jason Hart took his record for the Kingsclere trainer to 2-2 on mile handicap winner Arctic Vega.
