'Absolutely brilliant' One Master set for retirement after missing Breeders' Cup

One Master will not run in Saturday’s Grade 1 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile and is likely to be retired, with her trainer William Haggas hailing the six-year-old as “an absolutely brilliant mare”.

Owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, One Master was scratched from the Mile after having raised muscle enzymes when arriving at Keeneland this week. Although she responded well to treatment, the decision was taken not to run the three-time Group 1 winner at the weekend.

Haggas said: “She's not running. She got setfast when she arrived on the first morning out there. Her muscle enzymes were raised and, although they've come down after some treatment and she seems fine, the veterinary team in conjunction with us have decided she won't run.

“It's very disappointing but the most important thing is that she’s fine.”

One Master became the first triple winner of the Group 1 Prix de la Foret when scoring at Longchamp last month under regular rider Pierre-Charles Boudot.

An attempt at a fourth victory in the 7f Group 1 is unlikely, with Haggas expecting the mare to be retired following her Breeders’ Cup setback.

“She's finished now in all probability,” he said. “She's been invited to Hong Kong but I'd say that's less likely than likely. She's been an absolutely brilliant mare. Absolutely fantastic.”

Bred by the Jacksons, One Master won seven of her 23 starts including two Group 3 contests – the Oak Tree Stakes and the Fairy Bridge Stakes – alongside her Group 1 haul.

She was placed in a further eight starts, four of which were at Group 1 level, and collected £939,644 in win and place prize-money.
