Take note of jockey's choice in first nursery of the year at Haydock

2pts winIt's July which means it's nursery time and the first two-year-old handicap of the season takes place at Haydock with the Distinction Difference Nursery Handicap (3.00).

It is often said you should back top weights in nurseries in early summer and, while that is obviously an over-simplification, there is little doubt those at the lower end of the ratings scale are disadvantaged this early.

Horses carrying 8st 7lb or less in July nurseries over the last 12 years have an overall strike-rate of just 7.6 per cent, while those carrying more have a strike-rate of 17.2 per cent.
