A dress rehearsal tomorrow for Hong Kong’s big international meeting next month is unlikely to produce major upsets but the talking point will be the reappearance of globetrotting superstar Romantic Warrior in the Group 2 Jockey Club Cup (8.50).

Romantic Warrior has not run since his dramatic defeat in the Dubai Turf at Meydan on April 5 when he was touched off by Japanese-trained Soul Rush, beaten a nose. Seven months on the sidelines since with a fetlock injury is a concern, especially first up here against strong opposition.

But the seven-year-old has looked good in his barrier trials and trainer Danny Shum is typically bullish, particularly as James McDonald is back in Hong Kong and has been monitoring the horse he rode to win the Cox Plate, Yasuda Kinen and multiple local features.

He will face his old adversary, Triple Crown winner Voyage Bubble, whose last start introductory outing is best forgotten, especially with Zac Purton booked to ride this time, while Straight Arron, who won this race two years ago, is back with David Hayes and is set to run well.

It should be a formality for Hayes’s champion Ka Ying Rising as he saddles up for the Group 2 6f Jockey Club Sprint (7.40), his first run since winning The Everest in Sydney last month. The world’s best sprinter has reportedly thrived since returning home, although Purton says he felt a little fresh when he rode him again recently.

A wide draw (stall 10) is not ideal but better than being bottled up on the inside rail, and he should have his in-form stablemate Tomodachi Kokoroe (stall eight) to give him a lead in the first half of the race. Lucky Sweynesse is also in the mix if you discard his recent poor run in Japan.

Mark Newnham sends out the other headline act, the rapidly improving My Wish, in the Group 2 Jockey Club Mile (8.15), and from stall four, with Luke Ferraris riding, he is going to take a power of beating.  But he will be given a thorough test by the John Size-trained Red Lion, who is very capable on his day.

Earlier, Newnham can win again with Invincible Ibis in the Class 3 7f handicap (7.10), a young horse who still appears to have a little up his sleeve.  Lucy In The Sky, with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, is set to run his usual honest race.

And a newcomer worth noting is Public Attention, in the Class 3 6f handicap (9.25). Formerly trained by Price and Kent Junior for a Coolmore partnership, he won a Group 3 in Sydney and finished fifth in the Caulfield Guineas. He has trialled well for his new trainer Hayes.
