Tournament preview

An interesting field has assembled for this year’s World Seniors Championship, with former world champions Stephen Hendry, John Parrott and Ken Doherty joined by cuemen who have been performing at a decent level on the main tour.

One of those is Michael Holt. It was only a couple of years ago that the Hitman landed the Shoot Out crown and while Holt possesses the talent to have won more than just that single ranking event title, the Nottingham potter has still been a useful performer.

The 43-year-old hasn't had a great season on tour but he could still have plenty to offer in this field and Holt was good enough to beat Anthony Hamilton, Jamie Jones and Kyren Wilson, to name just a few, a couple of seasons ago.

That level of performance should be far too good for the likes of David Lilley, Hendry and Doherty in the top half of the Crucible draw. At 7-2 the Hitman looks excellent value to take out his senior rivals.

Ronnie O’Sullivan lifted a record-equalling seventh Crucible crown on Monday night and he is just 4-1 to go one better than Stephen Hendry and win his eighth World Championship title next year.

The Rocket began the World Championship as an 11-2 shot to triumph in Sheffield and his backers rarely had too much to be concerned about in the final as he beat Judd Trump 18-13.

O'Sullivan is now 7-2 favourite with Hills to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2022. Six-time world champion Steve Davis is the only other snooker player to have received the award in 1988.
