Tournament previews

Kim Clijsters was beaten by Garbine Muguruza on her return to tennis last month but it may not be long before the Belgian is ready to win titles again.

There were signs of encouragement in Dubai for the former number one, who is back competing again after eight years out, and, even at 36, she could still have something to give at the top level.

Clijsters lines up in the WTA Monterrey Open this week in a wide-open tournament where punters would be wise not to dismiss her chances despite obvious concerns over her match fitness.

Elina Svitolina is the number one seed and favourite in Mexico but has won just four matches in 2020, Johanna Konta has been in poor form and last season's finalist Victoria Azarenka makes her first start of the season.

Clijsters won the US Open on only her third start when returning to the sport for the first time in 2009 and is impossible to rule out despite a tough opener against Konta.

In the new WTA Lyon Open, Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin fully deserves to top the betting despite not winning a match since her Melbourne triumph.

World number five Kenin lost to two of the best young players in the WTA when beaten by Elena Rybakina in Dubai and Dayana Yastremska in Doha and she’s unlikely to face such stiff competition in France.

Home hopes Caroline Garcia and Kiki Mladenovic have been below their best for some time now while Russian Daria Kasatkina is still searching for her top-ten form of 2018.
