Day eight preview

There are eight singles matches due to take place at the US Open on Monday with British number one Cameron Norrie among those hoping to seal a quarter-final spot in the men's draw.

Norrie takes on Andrey Rublev in what promises to be a cracking last-16 encounter while second seed Rafael Nadal is also in action against home hope Frances Tiafoe.

The stars are also out in force in the women’s draw with Polish world number one Iga Swiatek, who heads the outright betting, bidding to showcase her New York title credentials against Wimbledon quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier.

With Norrie, Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, who faces Marin Cilic, and Jannik Sinner, who takes on Ilya Ivashka, all odds-on to make the last eight and looking hard to oppose, bettors should instead focus their attention on the women's action.

Danielle Collins v Aryna Sabalenka

This promises to be an absolute epic between two of the most powerful players on the WTA Tour and preference at the prices is for American hopeful Danielle Collins.

The 28-year-old started the season with a career-best performance as she finished runner-up to the now retired Ashleigh Barty at the Australian Open, but her 2022 campaign has since been derailed by injuries.

However, there were signs of encouragement heading into the US Open and she has franked that promise with straight-sets wins over Naomi Osaka, Cristian Bucsa and Alize Cornet in New York.

A clash with Aryna Sabalenka, who also employs a hard-hitting style, requires another step up but the Belarusian tends to make plenty of unforced errors, especially when under the sort of pressure she is likely to encounter in this contest.

The sixth seed has won all three previous meetings between the pair, including in the third round of the US Open last year, but Collins is in much better form this time around and looks ready to gain revenge.

Petra Kvitova v Jessica Pegula

Bookmakers rate Jessica Pegula slight favourite for this last-16 encounter, but Czech star Petra Kvitova looks the player to side with.

Kvitova has won both previous meetings with Pegula in straight sets and there was plenty to like about her gutsy come-from-behind win over Garbine Muguruza last time out.

Having finished runner-up to red-hot Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia in Cincinnati in her final event before the US Open, Kvitova should be extremely happy with the state of her game.

The two-time Grand Slam champion defeated the likes of Ons Jabeur and Madison Keys in Cincinnati and while Pegula was also a quarter-finalist there and a semi-finalist in Toronto, she did capitalise on soft draws.

The American is a classy operator but this is her best performance at her home Major and she needed three sets to see off inexperienced Chinese performer Yue Yuan last time out, suggesting she could be vulnerable against a more seasoned opponent.
