Stage Four preview

Caleb Ewan, tipped at 3-1 by Racing Post Sport justified his status as the favourite to win Stage Three of the 2020 Tour de France on Monday.

On a day that always looked destined for a sprint, the Australian punched through the pack to outpace Deceuninck–Quick Step's Sam Bennett, with the Irishman's teammate Julian Alaphilippe retaining the yellow jersey.

Stage Four provides the race's first mountain-top finish and with it a tactical puzzle for the big teams to ponder.

Never before has an alpine summit appeared so early in the Tour and that may well be a deliberate ploy from the organisers. Recent years have seen Ineos Grenadiers make their move on the first mountain finish but with so much racing to come, even they may hold fire this time.

The route sets off from Sisteron and takes in four categorised climbs before culminating on the Orcieres-Merlette - the first time the peloton has scaled the mountain on the Tour for 31 years.

Expect a shake-up among the General Classification contenders but nothing that will decide the race.

The finish looks to suit Alaphilippe and the man in the yellow jersey heads the betting but it may be one of the riders he beat into Nice on Sunday who strikes.

Adam Yates looked superb as he latched on to the breakaway that day and his Mitchelton-Scott team's insistence that he is hunting stages rather than an overall success could see him given a certain amount of freedom.

The Lancastrian's form is fantastic and after a string of near-misses, the 28-year-old may finally land a Grand Tour stage and perhaps with it, the maillot jaune.
