WTA Osaka preview

The Toray Pan Pacific Open, held in Osaka this year, is usually a decent tournament as its premier statuts implies but after some high-profile withdrawals it now features only six of the world's top 20.

The 2018 US Open champion, reigning Aussie Open champ and world number four Naomi Osaka has been installed as favourite but has just split with her second coach of the year, and she can be taken on as she arrives in much worse form than last year.

Angelique Kerber makes no appeal having also changed coaches recently and she has also lost her last five straight so it may be worth looking further down the list and one who looks a bit overpriced is Caroline Garcia.

The Frenchwoman isn't exactly a winning machine, but few of the field are, and she's had a decent year, winning in Nottingham and making the final in Strasbourg in the first half of the year.

She has mopped up similar tournaments at this time of year in Wuhan, Beijing and Tianjin since 2017, saying she enjoys the humid conditions. With most of these players able to beat each other on any given day, 33-1 looks a little generous.

WTA Seoul preview

In Seoul a competitive field line up for the Korea Open with a lot of similarly ranked players headed by world number 28 Maria Sakkari.

The Greek is a worthy favourite, having picked up her first tournament win in Rabat this year, and holding her highest ever ranking. However she hasn't played since the US Open and as a one-tournament winner she represents no value.

Ajla Tomljanovic is in decent form, with a run to the semi-finals of the Zhengzhou Open that was ended by Karolina Pliskova and she represents better value. The Australian has never won a tournament, however, and as proven winners are thin on the ground, it may be worth siding with 2017 Korea Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

That was her breakthrough year when she won the French Open, and although she hasn't managed to replicate that sort of form since, she will appreciate the return to calmer waters.

At 22, she has time on her side and will see this as the ideal opportunity to regain the winning habit. She has been struggling against top-20 players but can usually see off lesser opponents and should go well returned to this level.
