Hubert Hurkacz has enjoyed an excellent campaign and most of those who may not have taken the tall Pole seriously at the start of it are now doing so.

His high point came in the Winston-Salem Open last month, when he defeated Feliciano Lopez, Frances Tiafoe, Denis Shapovalov and Benoit Paire, quality performers all, to deservedly win the first main-tour title of his career.

It's no surprise then to see Hurkacz, 22, made favourite to open well in the indoor Moselle Open with a victory over Gregoire Barrere.

But while the Metz clash could be a close one – the big-serving Hurkacz is no stranger to sets culminating in tiebreaks – the value looks to be siding with the 25-year-old Frenchman.

The pair have crossed swords on two previous occasions, both times in Barrere's homeland. Hurkacz won their first meeting 5-7 6-4 6-4 in Plaisir in 2017, then Barrere levelled their personal series with a 7-6 6-7 6-1 victory in Quimper earlier this year.

Most oddsmakers agree on a handicap of 3.5 games but while Hurkacz may have enough to get the win, even if he does progress he may struggle to make light work of Barrere.

In St Petersburg, punters can consider backing Alexander Bublik to open well against Casper Ruud. Bublik hails from just south of Russia's second city but represents Kazakhstan these days. However, he has not always been the most reliable of performers.
