Previews

The world's best tennis players are in Tokyo for the Olympics, but that has not prevented two cracking ATP fields gathering in Atlanta and Kitzbuhel this week.

The events are as well, if not better, attended than usual and while Kitzbuhel marks the end of the main tour's clay-court calendar, Atlanta offers the chance for some decent pointers in the US Open Series which culminates at Flushing Meadows in late August and early September.

ATP Atlanta Open

Britain's Cameron Norrie deserves huge applause for his superb effort in landing his first main-tour singles title in Los Cabos on Saturday and he merits plenty of respect as third seed at the Atlanta Open.

Milos Raonic returns from his latest break and is the top seed, but it's a while since the Canadian returned to the sport in dominant style as used to be the case.

Nick Kyrgios also resumes his return from a break and the Australian is definitely capable of adding to his 2016 triumph in Georgia.

But it could pay punters to follow the latest form on offer this week and a punt on 19-year-old prodigy Brandon Nakashima may be wise.

Nakashima finished runner-up to Norrie in Los Cabos last week - Norrie trounced him 6-2 6-2 in the final - but the Californian teenager is blessed with considerable talent and could carry over his good form in Atlanta and prove a serious threat to Raonic in round two.

Jannik Sinner has travelled to the US this week and is seeded second, but there may be better outright value in chancing Jack Sock, who took the doubles title on grass in Newport earlier this month.

Sock's latest attempt to return to the limelight may prove more successful than one or two others that have gone before, but with the Nebraskan it will always be about whether he is fit enough to do himself justice and he seems to be in reasonable nick right now.

In the second round Sock may well have to find a way past sixth seed John Isner, who was victorious in Atlanta five times between 2013 and 2018, but the wildcard selection was ranked eighth in the world in 2017 so there is hope providing his physical condition is good.

ATP Generali Open

ATP Generali Open top seed Casper Ruud is going for a back-to-back Alpine double on clay following his title triumph in Gstaad on Sunday.

But while the Norwegian merits considerable respect, achieving that significant honour is likely to be tougher in the current calendar than might usually be the case.

All eight seeds in are in fair form in Austria, so there should be no excuses this week.

But with Ruud's task looking tough and Spanish aces Roberto Bautista Agut, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Carlos Alcaraz and Pedro Martinez all ensconced in the bottom half of the draw along with Laslo Djere, it could pay to back a player in the top half to prosper.

Filip Krajinovic has recently produced arguably the best form of his career and the 29-year-old Serb looks a big runner after reaching the final of the 500 Series Hamburg European Open earlier this month.

Krajinovic defeated Daniel Altmaier, Philipp Kohlschreiber, red-hot favourite Stefanos Tsitsipas and Djere on the way to the Rothenbaum Club final, where he was undone by Pablo Carreno Busta.

A reproduction of that form would give Krajinovic a fine chance of lifting the trophy in Kitzbuhel, but he may find Federico Delbonis a tough quarter-final opponent should the Argentinian come through a difficult opener against well-regarded Arthur Rinderknech.

It looks close between Krajinovic and Delbonis but considering the third seed has a bye and what looks a cosy passage into the last eight, a punt on the Serbian may prove more prudent.
