Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was runner-up in Erste Bank Open last season but his 2018 schedule has been blighted by injury and his latest venture to Vienna could be short-lived with a tricky opener against big-serving American Sam Querrey.

The Frenchman, who claimed his first win since returning from a spell on the sidelines in the European Open last week, has played just three competitive matches since withdrawing from Montpellier in February.

Tsonga would be a difficult proposition at his best but fitness must be taken on trust and two three-set matches in Antwerp - victory over Guido Pella followed by defeat to compatriot Gael Monfils - are not enough to suggest he’s in prime working order.

Querrey has also had a troubled season but he reached the quarter-finals in Chengdu, where classy Croat Marin Cilic was among his victims, and there’s less concern surrounding his well-being.

The giant American, who has won the last two meetings between the pair, recorded victories over Diego Schwartzman and Taylor Fritz in Shanghai last week and could be worth chancing.

British number one Kyle Edmund, fresh from claiming his maiden ATP Tour title at the European Open, is a warm order at 8-15 to begin his Austrian adventure by beating Schwartzman.

Ernests Gulbis defeated Jack Sock on his way to the final in Stockholm last week and can confirm the form when they lock horns in the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

As well as silencing Sock, Gulbis outclassed John Isner and rising youngster Denis Shapovalov and it’s difficult to see why he is going off odds-against having been a 4-6 poke in last week’s showdown.

Sock has struggled for form all season and has slipped down the rankings having won only two of his last 15 competitive encounters.
