Make no mistake, the task facing Stefanos Tsitsipas is a formidable one. But the 22-year-old Greek has what it takes to defy the odds and beat Novak Djokovic in the French Open final.

Much has always been made of the dominance of the 'big three', particularly in Grand Slams, and Djokovic offered a timely reminder of his brilliance when defeating red-hot favourite Rafael Nadal in an epic semi-final on Friday.

The bookies have seemed resigned to the winner coming from that side of the draw. However, with Dominic Thiem in poor form, Tsitsipas has looked the most likely to upset the apple cart and he has done little wrong in Paris over the last fortnight, dropping just one set before battling to a 3-2 win over Alexander Zverev in the last four.

Djokovic, an 18-time Grand Slam winner, has the chance to achieve a feat that Nadal and Roger Federer never have by winning each Slam more than once. However, he looks more vulnerable than odds of 1-3 might imply.

The super Serb was arguably fortunate to make the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. He trailed Lorenzo Musetti by two sets before the Italian teenager faltered badly due to injury, but also due to realising the enormity of what he was about to achieve. The same should not be expected of Tsitsipas.

While he may only be 22 and playing in his first Grand Slam final, the Greek is a seven-time ATP World Tour winner, including the 2019 Tour Finals and 2021 Monte Carlo Masters, and he arrived in Paris after another confidence-boosting title win in Lyon.

He must defy a 2-5 head-to-head record, but Tsitsipas pushed Djokovic all the way when the pair met in the semi-finals in Paris last year, recovering from two sets down to force a decider which Djokovic would win, and there was barely anything between them when the Serb won a marathon match in Rome a month ago.

Djokovic is the right favourite but Tsitsipas is a dangerous underdog who will carry more than a puncher's chance on to Court Philippe-Chatrier when he seeks to become Greece's first Grand Slam champion.
