The bottom half of the Mercedes Cup draw has opened wide for Denis Kudla and it will be disappointing if the American cannot find a way past Matteo Berrettini in their quarter-final clash in Stuttgart.

Kudla was recommended each-way at 100-1 before the tournament started and while there is still plenty of work to do before place backers realise a profit, his 7-5 6-7 7-6 second-round victory over Gael Monfils should give the Kiev-born player a sizeable boost.

Berrettini followed a 6-3 6-4 triumph over out-of-sorts Nick Kyrgios with a 6-4 6-2 win over Karen Khachanov, so given that he is ranked higher than Kudla it’s no great surprise to see him installed as favourite to progress to the semi-finals.

However, Kudla, who leads their personal series 3-2, is an underrated performer who ought to be making the most of chances such as these and he may just have enough to deny the Italian, who holds titles in Gstaad and Budapest, where he was victorious in April.

The winner of this clash will play either Jan-Lennard Struff or Lucas Pouille for a place in Sunday’s final.

Recommendation
D Kudla
