Ashleigh Barty to win Adelaide International

None of Ashleigh Barty's seven singles tournament victories have come in her native Australia but she can triumph on home soil for the first time by justifying top-seed status at the inaugural Adelaide International.

World number one Barty is the headline act in a strong field featuring eight of the top 16 ranked players and is housed in the easier half of the draw.

The bottom half looks ultra-competitive and includes second seed Simona Halep, who makes her seasonal debut, and third-seed Petra Kvitova, who reached the semi-finals at the Brisbane International.

Fourth-seed Belinda Bencic is the top-ranked opponent in Barty's half, however, she was well below her best when losing 6-3 3-6 3-6 to Russia's Anna Blinkova in the first round of the Shenzhen Open.

Angelique Kerber is the biggest name standing between Barty and the semi-finals but has slipped to 18th in the rankings and was a first-round loser in Brisbane.

Barty, was a second-round casualty in Brisbane, can get the party started in Adelaide.

Garbine Muguruza's star has fallen since she was crowned Wimbledon champion in 2017 but she started this year with a run to the semi-finals of the Shenzhen Open and looks a major contender at the Hobart International.

Despite her ranking dropping to 35, Muguruza is the second seed at an event featuring just four of the world's top 40 ranked players.

Top seed Elise Mertens and third seed Elena Rybakina, a losing finalist at Shenzhen, have strong claims but are in the opposite half of the draw to Muguruza, who could land her first title since winning in Monterrey in April last year.
