As well as Novak Djokovic opening proceedings as the men's singles defending champion at the All England Club, British number one Kyle Edmund is on the Centre Court menu on day one of the grass-court major.

Djokovic still looks the one to beat this fortnight, but after losing to Denis Shapovalov at the Boodles exhibition event last week a Wimbledon opener against Philipp Kohlschreiber should go down as a genuine test.

It's one the world number one should come through, but opening-day punters may find better value elsewhere.

Tipsarevic v Nishioka

Janko Tipsarevic is unlikely to ever go down in punters' notebooks as one of tennis's most trustworthy performers, but the Serb is playing pretty well this year having got himself in decent shape fitness-wise before the campaign started.

He's still a slight outsider to defeat Yoshihito Nishioka, who is going along okay without turning many heads. But if Tipsarevic turns up at Wimbledon in a mood to impress, then the former world number eight is still a seriously useful performer on his day.

Darcis v M Zverev

Mischa Zverev is having a campaign to forget and while the German, who is plummeting down the rankings at a rate of knots, still enjoys playing, it may not be long before he packs in his day job.

Steve Darcis has been a proud, good-quality operator throughout his career and it's great to see the Belgian Davis Cup legend back playing and enjoying his tennis.

It's also no surprise to see that he has been well backed to win his opening match and he ought to progress.

Carreno Busta v Popyrin

Pablo Carreno Busta is a quality performer on any terrain, but the Spaniard may have to toil to see off promising Alexei Popyrin.

This one could go all the way – Popyrin is no stranger to contesting tiebreaks – and so going over the total games at 39.5 looks the way to go.

Recommendation
Over 39.5 games

Carballes Baena v Kecmanovic

There was early opposition to Miomir Kecmanovic after he reached the Antalya Open final in baking sun in Turkey last week, but the Serb looks capable of defeating Roberto Carballes Baena if he's feeling up to the task in London.

Carballes Baena is no world-beater and more at home on clay, but the Spaniard has done well to make progress this season.

However, Kecmanovic looks a solid performer and potentially useful on the nippy green courts and is preferred.

Recommendation
M Kecmanovic
