Despite being the higher ranked player and having also finished runner-up at Wimbledon in July, fifth seed Ons Jabeur finds herself as the outsider for her US semi-final showdown with Caroline Garcia.

However that looks completely justified as her French opponent is in the form of her life and, arguably, in the best nick of any player on the WTA Tour.

Since the middle of June, former world number four Garcia has been transformed, claiming titles on three different surfaces in Bad Homburg, Warsaw and Cincinnati.

That takes her record since suffering an early exit in Birmingham three months ago to 31 wins and just four defeats, formidable form which makes her far more dangerous than her seeding of 17 in New York Implies.

This is a first Grand Slam semi-final appearance in the topsy-turvy career of Garcia but she has looked unfazed by the challenge at Flushing Meadows and is experienced enough to cope with the pressures surrounding this new situation.

The 28-year-old has won all five of her US Open assignments in straight sets, which is seriously impressive as her list of scalps include 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu, rejuvenated American Alison Riske-Amritraj and French Open runner-up Cori Gauff.

Jabeur is another tough rival but Garcia’s confidence must be at an all-time high having won her last 13 matches and dropping sets on just four occasions.

Her opponent has won four of her five US Open matches in straight sets but she has faced only one player inside the world’s top 30 and, although versatile, she may be at her most vulnerable on this surface.
