Day six preview
Dan Evans v Felix Auger-Aliassime
Dan Evans is the last Briton standing at this year’s Australian Open but the Birmingham ace may see his time down under come to an end against third-round opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime.
There is no disputing that the fresher of the pair is Evans, who dismantled an out-of-sorts David Goffin in round one before receiving a walkover when Arthur Rinderknech was forced to withdraw injured.
However, whether that entitles him to be pick-em in his meeting with the classy Canadian is open to debate.
While Evans has sauntered into round three, Auger-Aliassime has been put through the wringer as he needed five sets to see off Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori and four against Spanish star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
But they are two of the more promising youngsters on the ATP Tour and, at only 21 years of age, Auger-Aliassime shouldn't be found wanting because of fatigue.
Amazingly, the ninth seed is still awaiting a maiden ATP title but Auger-Aliassime is starting to live up to expectations in Grand Slam tournaments, as highlighted by last season’s quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon, which was followed by a semi-final run at the US Open.
Evans has made an excellent start to the year but so too has Auger-Aliassime, who recorded wins over Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut in preparation for this event at the ATP Cup.
There may be a few twists and turns along the way, but the Canadian looks a future Grand Slam champion in waiting and is good value to end this year's British challenge.
Marketa Vondrousova v Aryna Sabalenka
Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka has struggled during her opening two matches in the season's first major, but her luck looks set to run out against Marketa Vondrousova.
In her first two Melbourne assignments against Storm Sanders and Xinyu Wang, Sabalenka lost the opening set before battling her way to victory.
However, the world number two has looked uncharacteristically vulnerable on serve, with some reports suggesting she is struggling with the yips.
That would go some way to explaining why she has tallied 31 double faults in her two first singles outings at Melbourne Park and those weaknesses could be exploited by her Czech opponent.
Vondrousova, who has won two of her three previous hard-court meetings with the Belarusian, has not dropped a set this week and readily brushed aside the capable Liudmila Samsonova 6-2 7-5 in the last round.
Sabalenka has been fortunate to survive her slow starts and serving demons against weaker opponents this week, but she may not be able allowed such luxuries to 2019 French Open runner-up Vondrousova, who can claim the opening set before going on to seal her place in round four.
