This is one of the key weeks in the lead-up to Wimbledon and it could pay to back two talented young outsiders to ensure their opponents have to work hard for victory in London and Birmingham on Tuesday.

In the capital, the oddsmakers expect Britain's Dan Evans to progress at the expense of young Australian Alexei Popyrin in the opening round of the Cinch Championship

But while the Brummie may have enough to win the day, he may not have things all his own way at the Queen's Club.

Popyrin is one of the best young players in tennis - he captured his first title in Singapore in February and there should be many more to come - and the unseeded Sydneysider could be good enough to push sixth seed Evans to a deciding set.

It's their first career meeting and Evans, 31, will hope to use his experience and brawn to good effect. But Popyrin, ten years his opponent's junior, looks a natural on all surfaces and considering he swept aside consistent world number 12 Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets at Wimbledon in 2019, he could make Evans pull out the stops.

In Evans' home city, American starlet Caty McNally may be capable of causing problems for Ons Jabeur.

Tunisian power-pack Jabeur is seeded second in the Viking Classic in Edgbaston, but McNally, 19, is one of the more talented US youngsters and her game looked in good order in qualifying when posting straight-sets wins over Tara Moore and Kurumi Nara.

McNally still lacks the self-belief of her friend and regular doubles partner Cori Gauff, but the Cincinnati native may not have to spend weekends trying to qualify for main draws for long.

Jabeur makes the most of her ability and has achieved miracles for Tunisian tennis, but she may still be vulnerable against an opponent as capable as McNally.

Jabeur defeated McNally 6-2 6-4 on a Kentucky hard court last year, but the outsider's game could be better suited to grass at this stage of her career.

Both outsiders can be backed to win at least a set against their favoured opponents.
