Ireland defeated France 26-14 in Dublin to keep alive their remote hopes of back-to-back Six Nations titles going into the final round of games.

The champions, who were outplayed by England in their opener and earned close wins over Italy and Scotland, overwhelmed France thanks to tries from Rory Best, Johnny Sexton and Jack Conan and opened up a 19-0 half-time lead.

Keith Earls’s 30th international try secured Ireland a bonus point before France regained some pride with late tries from Yoann Huget and Camille Chat.

Ireland will try to upset Wales’s Grand Slam hopes and overtake the Six Nations leaders with a win in Cardiff on Saturday, but also need Scotland to beat England at Twickenham for the first time in 36 years to retain the title.

Wales are 5-6 with Sky Bet to win the Six Nations and Slam, although no team to finish the competition unbeaten, an 11-10 chance, has been well backed.

England are 11-8 second-favourites to foil Wales’ Six Nations title hopes with Ireland 18-1 shots.
