Napoli being closely pursued by reigning champs Juventus

With Napoli, Juventus, Inter and Roma separated by only four points it’s safe to that the Serie A title race is the most exciting of Europe’s five biggest leagues and it’s about time that was the case with Juventus dominant since regaining the crown in the 2011-12.

But the signs of a competition developing were there last season as Juve captured the Scudetto by only four points and this year’s finish could be even closer with the Old Lady and Napoli joint-favourites with bookmakers.

Inter and Roma are available at bigger odds but both have looked solid in defence this season and could have a better chance than the prices suggest, although it will come as a surprise if one of the top two doesn’t take the title.

Juve have experience on their side, even if the departed Leonardo Bonucci is still badly missed in the bigger games, and they’re not certain to get through a Champions League last-16 tie against Tottenham, which would help the title prospects of Max Allegri’s team.

Napoli are one of the most expressive sides on the continent and should push Juve all the way. However, they are now engaged in a Europa League campaign which could disrupt their attempt to win Serie A for the first time since the days of Maradona.

Those looking for a bet can look towards the relegation market. Benevento’s pointless start was only ended when goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli’s sensational last-minute header helped them to a 2-2 draw with Milan and they surely can’t turn things around.

Assuming they don’t, two more teams can go down and those between 14th and 19th place are split by just four points. At the prices, Spal could be the team to back for the dropzone.

Only Bologna have fewer shots on target per game than the Biancazzurri and, crucially, Spal face trips to fellow troubled clubs Cagliari, Crotone, Sassuolo, Genoa and Verona before the season is out. They’re already in the relegation zone and points might prove hard to come by in 2018.
