Match preview

France defence coach Shaun Edwards knows everything about Wales after winning the last of three Grand Slams and four Six Nations titles in 2019 as Warren Gatland's assistant.

And Les Bleus have won both matches of the Fabien Galthie era with a heady mix of power and panache.

But the best-value bet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff still looks to be the Dragons to prevail by a narrow margin as they did in both the teams' crazy meetings last year.

Those games in Paris and their World Cup quarter-final both saw second-half comebacks and Wales have won seven of the nations' last eight battles in Cardiff.

New Wales head coach Wayne Pivac has named the most-capped Six Nations side in history. It is not just an instinctive move to play experience against Les Bleus' youth or a reaction to their defeat in Dublin but a clear analysis of France's wins over England and Italy.

Eddie Jones' men might have won in Paris if he had employed a balanced back row, rather than switching flanker Tom Curry to number eight, and picked a scrum-half who fizzes around the park.

The Azzurri were never going to prevail at the Stade de France a fortnight ago but they plundered points because they were fluent on their own ball and number nine Callum Braley set a superb tempo.

The return of breakdown bruiser Ross Moriarty to the Wales flank is a bid to counter the sizzling efforts of Charles Ollivon and Gregory Alldritt in the loose and allow the ball-carrying skills of Taulupe Faletau to be maximised.

Tomos Williams offers verve around the fringes but Gareth Davies' recall at scrum-half is because he possesses the electric pace of a wing when making angled darts and support runs.

France couldn't handle Jonny May when he made these for England so a wager on Davies to score a 15th Test try could pay.

Wales should also enjoy enough room out wide with round-one hat-trick hero Josh Adams scoring for fun and George North up against emergency wing Gael Fickou to make it 13 straight competitive wins in Cardiff and end France's Grand Slam hopes.
