Match preview

Mikel Arteta's claim this week that he enjoys his trips to Burnley was greeted with some scepticism but bookmakers expect his Arsenal side to leave Turf Moor with three points.

The Gunners certainly impressed in last weekend's 3-1 victory at Leicester, where they came back after conceding a goal in the sixth minute, but they may have to work hard for another away win.

Burnley were blown away by Tottenham last weekend, allowing Gareth Bale to open the scoring after just 68 seconds on their way to a 4-0 defeat in north London.

Sean Dyche got the response he wanted with a "super performance" in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Leicester. However, the Foxes still racked up 16 attempts at goal despite the absence of key midfielders James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, and that stat does not bode well for Burnley's clash with Arsenal.

The Gunners' squad looks in good shape and they should have enough attacking quality to trouble Burnley centre-backs James Tarkowski and Ben Mee and England goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are both in fine form along with Nicolas Pepe, who has scored four goals in his last five away matches in the Premier League.

Impressive youngster Emile Smith Rowe is a doubt but Arteta can still unleash Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard and the dynamic Bukayo Saka while Willian gave arguably his best performance in an Arsenal shirt at Leicester last time out.

The Gunners have enjoyed some exciting wins in open contests against the Foxes (3-1), Benfica (3-2) and Leeds (4-2) in recent weeks but they may have to be more patient at Burnley.

The Clarets' comprehensive loss at Spurs was a rare blot on their solid defensive record and they have drawn their last four home Premier League matches with 1-1 scorelines against Brighton, Fulham and Leicester as well as a goalless stalemate against West Brom.

The fact that Burnley were unable to find a way past the struggling Baggies, who were reduced to ten men after half an hour, is a reflection of their attacking limitations.

They benefited from a red card to Granit Xhaka early in the second half of December's reverse fixture at Arsenal where Aubameyang's own goal gave the Clarets a 1-0 win.

However, they had only 35 per cent of possession against Arsenal's ten men and the Gunners, with a rejuvenated Xhaka alongside Thomas Partey in centre midfield, should be backed to avenge that defeat with a hard-fought win at Turf Moor.

Key stat

Nine of Burnley's last ten home league and cup games have produced under 2.5 goals.
