Thompson v Seppi

Andreas Seppi has started the new year on the front foot, but the Italian may keep up the good work only for so long and he is vulnerable against improving Jordan Thompson.

Australian Thompson's young compatriot Alex de Minaur has been grabbing all the headlines, especially after winning in Sydney last week, and that could be beneficial to some of the home nation's other starlets.

Thompson may never scale the heights that De Minaur is well on the way to doing, but he's a solid enough performer in his own right and the way he denied Feliciano Lopez in straight sets in his Melbourne Park opener was admirable.

Busy Sydney finalist Seppi ousted Steve Johnson in four sets but may need to find even more.

Kontaveit v Sasnovich

Anett Kontaveit is a difficult player to get right. There's definitely talent there, although predicting when the Estonian is going to produce the goods is not easy.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who Kontaveit meets for a place in the least 32, is getting better and better and the Belarusian may already be a superior player on hard terrain to her opponent.

The rankings tell us Kontaveit is the 20th-best player who has travelled to Victoria, but Sasnovich only just missed out on a seeding and the fact she has already won three of their eight previous meetings suggests she knows how to emerge victorious in this match-up.

Tsurenko v Anisimova

The world could be Amanda Anisimova's oyster – but maybe not just yet.

Lesia Tsurenko has worked so hard on her game that she's making life tough for the best of them these days, and it will be a surprise if 17-year-old American Anisimova has the lungs to keep up with her Ukrainian opponent in the searing heat in Melbourne.

Tsurenko went close to defeating Karolina Pliskova in the Brisbane final but rolled her ankle during that clash. Happily it does not look to have affected her much and she did well to overcome Ekaterina Alexandrova on day one of the major.

That was a great result and coach Rennae Stubbs will ask her fit-as-a-fiddle charge to make sure she moves Anisimova around on court as much she possibly can.

The younger player may be up to winning one set but she will do well to claim two.

Recommendation
L Tsurenko
