Day four betting preview

Fabio Fognini v Marton Fucsovics

Fabio Fognini is an opportunist and the capable Italian will be well aware that he has a major chance of progressing deep in this year's French Open, being in the opposite half of the draw to Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Fognini, Monte Carlo Masters hero in 2019, was a 200-1 chance to reach the final and anyone who has backed him to reach his first Grand Slam singles title match will be slightly more excited following the early exit of Dominic Thiem.

The 27th seed has struggled with the stamina demands of Roland Garros in the past, but Fognini certainly looked to be on top of his game in his opener, when ousting useful wild-card Gregoire Barrere in straight sets.

Marton Fucsovics, Fognini's opponent in round two, ousted veteran Gilles Simon, also in straight sets, in his curtain-raiser. But while Fucsovics is no slouch on clay, Fognini looks the superior performer when he's in the mood to prosper.

Fognini leads their personal series 2-1 and did well to deny Fucsovics in their previous clash at Wimbledon in 2019. This is a first clay-court meeting for the pair, but if Fognini can defeat the Hungarian on grass, there's a reasonable chance he could do likewise on the slower red terrain.

Federico Delbonis v Pablo Andujar

Federico Delbonis gets the oddsmakers' vote in his battle with fellow stalwart Pablo Andujar, possibly by virtue of being the younger man, but with both players performing well it will be a minor surprise if this last-64 clash is over quickly.

Both are seasoned operators, especially on clay. Delbonis has been a major player for Argentina in the original-format Davis Cup, while Andujar has only recently started to perform better against top-ten players.

With both men possibly fancying their chances of nailing a third-round berth, it could be nip-and-tuck stuff.

Delbonis, 30, won their latest encounter – a close three-set tussle in Sardinia last year – but the first six matches in their series all went the way of the 35-year-old Spaniard.

Andujar, who upended dual Roland Garros singles finalist Dominic Thiem in his opener, will do well to triumph in straight sets, though, so there could be mileage in backing over 36.5 games to be contested.

Thiago Monteiro v Steve Johnson

Thiago Monteiro had little to do to dismiss Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets in his opener because the Argentinian lucky loser, while a promising performer for the future, had been struggling in the qualifiers.

The Brazilian may have more to do against Steve Johnson, who fought back gallantly to oust Frances Tiafoe 6-7 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-1.

Johnson has been below par for some time, largely down to coming to terms with the death of his father. But the Californian has performed well on clay in the past and, fresh after a fallow period, Johnson may have found a second wind which could make him a danger to many in Paris.

Monteiro hasn't been in top nick – he last made the quarter-finals of a 250 Series tournament in February – so this outing affords a big chance for Johnson, who can be backed to win at least a set.

Sorana Cirstea v Martina Trevisan

Sorana Cirstea is all the rage for her second-round outing after winning her second main-tour title in Istanbul in April and downing Johanna Konta 7-6 6-2 in her Roland Garros opener.

But it would be wrong to dismiss the chances of similarly feisty operator Martina Trevisan posing the Romanian problems in their first career meeting, especially considering the way the Italian performed in last year's tournament when coming through qualifying to reach the quarter-finals with victories over Camila Giorgi, Cori Gauff, Maria Sakkari and Kiki Bertens.

Trevisan opened up well enough in Paris this year when coming through a close three-set tussle against Alison van Uytvanck.

Given that Konta has not looked short of her best of late and Cirstea's form may not be quite as strong as some believe, a punt on Trevisan, both on the handicaps with a start of 5.5 games and to upset the odds at a huge price, would seem warranted.
