Match preview

Manchester City will become the final team to kick off their 2020-21 Premier League campaign on Monday evening as they look to wrestle the title back from Liverpool and the Citizens face a difficult trip to Wolves.

Pep Guardiola's men lost home and away to the Black Country outfit last season, going down 3-2 and 2-0, and it could be another testing encounter for the blue side of Manchester, who haven't tasted victory at Molineux since April 2012.

City have won their last two away games in the league, thrashing Brighton and Watford 5-0 and 4-0 respectively, but they lost seven times on the road last season, including a 3-2 defeat to bottom-club Norwich.

Dutch international Nathan Ake has been brought in from Bournemouth to shore up the defence, but there is still a sense that the Citizens can be got at and a confident Wolves side may well expose them again.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men started their campaign with a 2-0 victory at Sheffield United, as goals from Raul Jimenez and Romain Saiss inside the opening six minutes settled the game, and a third clean sheet from their last five league matches was an added bonus.

Saiss, Conor Coady and Willy Boly were impressive as a back three against the Blades, while Adama Traore still caused problems in the final third despite being deployed at right wing-back.

Wolves have made Molineux a fortress lately, losing just one of their last seven home league outings, and they are unbeaten in City's last three visits in all competitions.

With the visitors expected to be without French centre-back Aymeric Laporte, who returned a positive Covid-19 test, there will be pressure on new arrival Ake to slot in straight away.

Throw in the fact that the club's record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is likely to be sidelined for a further two months due to a knee issue, and there are some selection dilemmas for Guardiola.

City have a fantastic opening-day record, as they are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League curtain-raisers, but Pep has found life tricky against Nuno. The Spaniard has a losing record against only two of the managers he has faced at least five times – Jurgen Klopp and Nuno.

City could be slow to get out of the blocks in their opening game so backing Wolves in the double-chance market looks the best bet.

Key stat

Wolves did the double over City last season, winning 3-2 at home and 2-0 at the Etihad.
