Match preview

It has been a dismal season for Newcastle and they remain in the thick of the Premier League relegation battle, but they could get something from Sunday's home clash against Tottenham.

The Magpies are on an awful run, having failed to win any of their last six games and recording just two victories from their previous 20 matches in all competitions.

However, Steve Bruce's men have shown more character at home in recent weeks and they are unbeaten in the last three engagements at St James' Park, beating Southampton 3-2 before back-to-back 1-1 draws against Wolves and Aston Villa.

Newcastle have been marginally better at home this season, collecting 16 of their 28 points on Tyneside, and they could take advantage of a Spurs side who have been inconsistent on the road.

Tottenham have lost six of their last nine away games in all competitions, while they have tasted defeat in four of their seven away league fixtures in 2021, going down at Arsenal, Manchester City, Brighton and West Ham.

Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son have combined for 30 goals, accounting for more than half of the club's 49 league strikes, but if Newcastle can limit their impact they have a good chance of taking something from the encounter.

The Magpies are also set to be boosted by the return of Allan Saint-Maximin, who has been missing since limping off during the home draw with Wolves in February.

The 24-year-old is arguably Newcastle's second-best attacking weapon behind top scorer Callum Wilson, and he could provide the spark that has been lacking for the hosts in recent weeks, although it remains to be seen whether he is handed a start or is named on the bench.

Bruce's men managed to snatch a share of the spoils in the reverse fixture in September and with their closest relegation rivals Fulham not in action until after this clash, the Magpies have a great chance to put some pressure on the Cottagers.

Backing a straight Newcastle victory may be slightly ambitious, but the double-chance market looks like a sensible betting avenue to go down as the hosts are capable of avoiding defeat.

Key stat

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last three Premier League games at St James' Park, winning one and drawing two.
