Match preview
Tottenham's tough week could get even worse with a Premier League defeat against Aston Villa.
After a feeble 2-1 derby defeat by Arsenal in the league last Sunday, woeful Spurs were then dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb, losing the second leg 3-0. An apologetic Jose Mourinho offered no excuses after his side threw away their 2-0 first-leg lead and instead slammed his players' attitude, which will now be tested at Villa Park.
Before losing to Arsenal, Mourinho's men had been on a five-game winning streak in all competitions. A rejuvenated Gareth Bale finally looked back to his best, while Harry Kane was ticking along nicely with two goals in four games to take his season's tally to 26. But their old failings have returned at the worst possible time and Spurs are now in a fight to make the top six.
Heung-Min Son's likely absence through injury makes matters worse for the visitors and Dean Smith's Villa can deepen Tottenham's gloom by grabbing their first win in four games to kick-start their own bid to secure at least a top-half finish.
Villa's poor run has coincided with playmaker Jack Grealish's shin injury. He's unlikely to return against Spurs, but Ollie Watkins, who has ten goals this season, should be on a high after getting his first England call-up.
Villa's unpredictable home form - they've managed just five wins from 12 - is a concern, but overall they're enjoying a decent campaign. Considering Tottenham's current fragility, the home side look good value to come out on top and add to Mourinho's problems.
Key stat
Tottenham have not won any of their last five league matches when Heung-Min Son has been absent, drawing two and losing three.
