Match preview

Arsenal and Newcastle meet at the Emirates on Monday for the second time this month and it could be another unhappy evening for Steve Bruce's visitors, who are being sucked into a relegation battle.

The Magpies made the trip to north London on January 9 for an FA Cup third-round clash, and although they kept the score to 0-0 after 90 minutes, the Gunners scored twice in extra time to progress in the competition.

Newcastle followed up that early cup exit with a 1-0 defeat at rock-bottom Sheffield United three days later - that result handed the Blades their first league win of the campaign at the 18th attempt.

The Toon Army are on an eight-game winless run across all competitions, having last tasted victory in a 2-1 win over West Brom on December 12, and Bruce was recently handed the dreaded vote of confidence by owner Mike Ashley.

Newcastle have lost their last five away outings - conceding 11 and failing to score in the last four - and another trip to the Emirates is the last thing they need.

The Magpies have lost their last eight Premier League encounters at Arsenal and they have been on the end of some heavy defeats during that run, having lost 7-3 in 2012, 3-0 and 4-1 in 2014 and 4-0 last year.

Bruce's side have also lacked creativity throughout the campaign, netting just 18 times in the league, while they have scored only once in their last six games across all competitions.

It all looks to be a recipe for disaster for the north-east outfit and they will find it hard to get anything from an Arsenal side who are slowly starting to climb up the table after a dismal start.

The Gunners dropped to 15th at one point this season but a four-game unbeaten run in the league, during which they have beaten Chelsea, Brighton and West Brom before drawing with Crystal Palace, has got them looking up the table rather than over their shoulders.

Mikel Arteta's men have sharpened up at the back, keeping three consecutive clean sheets, and they haven't conceded against Newcastle since September 2018.

Arsenal have lost just one of their last five home engagements, that coming against Manchester City, and they should have more than enough to get the job done on Monday.

With Newcastle looking lost for ideas right now and continuing to adopt a defensive style, backing the Gunners to pick up all three points with a clean sheet looks to be the betting route to go down.

Key stat

Newcastle haven't won at the Emirates since November 2010.
