Match preview

Manchester United have sucked the life out of this quarter-final tie after a thoroughly professional performance in Granada a week ago and should be able to ease their way into the last four without too much fuss.

Granada, so good this season in both La Liga and also their debut European campaign, had precious little to offer last week, slumping to a 2-0 defeat which probably flattered them rather than United.

They bounced back at the weekend with a 2-1 win at lowly Valladolid, snapping a four-match winless streak in the process, but there was very little from Diego Martinez's men in the first leg to suggest there will be many issues for United at Old Trafford.

Granada have lost both their away games in the knockout stages – 2-1 at both Napoli and Molde – and if they are to be presented with a way back it's more likely to be down to United and one of their famed lacklusture first-half showings.

Presuming they can cut out any errors they should have the players to manage this tie, just as they did the second legs in both previous rounds against Sociedad and Milan.

Both matches were low scoring – United drew 0-0 at home to Sociedad and won 1-0 at Milan – and if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gets his tactics correct he can ensure this tussle too is devoid of any unnecessary fireworks.

Eight of United's last 11 matches have produced two goals or fewer and this second leg may be added to that list.

Key stat

Granada have lost eight of their last 11 league and European fixtures, winning just once.
