Home advantage counts for plenty in the Champions League and it could help Tottenham earn a positive result at home to German giants Bayern Munich.

Only four away sides were victorious on matchday one of this season's competition and this should be a much more difficult 90 minutes for Niko Kovac's side than the odds suggest.

Bayern, much like night follows day, are top of the Bundesliga after six matches and will fully expect to claim their eighth straight title.

But Bayern failed to win away to any of the other top-four sides - Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen - last term and have had to settle for a point at Leipzig this season. They also lost the German Super Cup in Dortmund, so are clearly less assured on the road.

It's difficult to know where the Bundesliga currently stands in the European hierarchy with growing concern there over the mid-range outfits continually selling their best players.

Paderborn, who lost 3-2 at home to Bayern on Saturday, have an annual budget of just €11m, which shows the gulf between the best and the rest, while Eintracht Frankfurt were smashed 3-0 at home by a makeshift Arsenal side in the Europa League two weeks ago.

Tottenham beat Dortmund home and away in last season's Champions League last 16 and this will have to go down as one of Bayern's most difficult fixtures before the winter break.

Kovac still has some wonderful players at his disposal.

Robert Lewandowski broke a Bundesliga record at the weekend by becoming the first player to score ten goals in the opening six matches of the campaign and his relationship with playmaker Philippe Coutinho is developing nicely.

Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry offer pace from wide and there are World Cup winners at the back with Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard arriving in the summer to bolster the ranks.

Defensively, however, Bayern are still not perfect with two clean sheets in six league games and a national debate over the form of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

There is also a decent form line through Ajax, who drew twice with Bayern in last season's Champions League, before being eliminated by Tottenham on away goals in the semi-finals.

Spurs showed their relish for a challenge in last season's run to the final when Manchester City were defeated at their new stadium.

Since the 2017-18 season they have also taken four points off Real Madrid and drawn away to Juventus and Barcelona and with Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son in tandem, Mauricio Pochettino's men possess enough firepower to hold their own against another European heavyweight.
