Celtic v Atletico Madrid team news

Celtic

Celtic can include defender Gustaf Lagerbielke after his suspension against Lazio but Cameron Carter-Vickers could be favoured from the start. Maik Nawrocki, Marco Tilio, Stephen Welch, James McCarthy and Liel Abada are absent.

Atletico Madrid

Stefan Savic might be fit to make the bench for Atletico after missing out on Saturday against Celta Vigo due to illness. Caglar Soyuncu returned to play the final 14 minutes against Celta but Samuel Lino is out after being withdrawn at half-time. Jose Gimenez, Memphis Depay, Thomas Lemar, Reinaldo and Vitolo are long-term fitness absentees.

Celtic v Atletico Madrid predictions

Celtic are still to secure a point in this season's Champions League and they could be set for another frustrating evening against Atletico Madrid.

The Bhoys are already seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table but Brendan Rodgers' real challenge is translating his team's domestic form into consistent results in Europe.

They were overwhelmed in their opening 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord but were better against Lazio, taking the lead before succumbing 2-1 after Pedro's stoppage-time winner.

Do they lack quality? Or is it nous and experience that are absent from their armoury?

Wednesday's opponents, Atletico, have all those in abundance and sit top of Group E after drawing 1-1 against Lazio and beating Feyenoord 3-2.

While Girona's early season form has seen them tipped as surprise title challengers to Real Madrid and Barcelona, Los Colchoneros have been flying under the radar.

Diego Simeone's side have won six in a row in all competitions and sit fourth domestically, three points off the pace but with a game in hand.

Atleti have been far from perfect, though, conceding in wins over Cadiz, Feyenoord and Real Sociedad and arguably only ending that run courtesy of an early red card for Celta Vigo in Saturday's 3-0 win at Balaidos.

Both teams have scored in five of Atletico's last seven competitive games, a statistic that will give the Bhoys hope. However, Simeone's side are in storming form and should be too good for their hosts.

Key stat

Atletico Madrid have won their last six games in all competitions.
