Preview
It's difficult to know what it is about the BoyleSports Grand Slam which gets the top pros so spiky but there will be no love lost between Michael Smith and Glen Durrant in their quarter-final showdown.
The competition which produced one of Ted Hankey's greatest meltdowns and only last year saw Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson close to blows in a bad-tempered final seems to wind up players like no other event.
There didn't seem to be any enmity between Smith and Durrant before they arrived in the Black Country but there sure is now, with both at each other over whether or not Duzza should even be in the field as the reigning BDO champion given that he now chucks with the PDC.
Smith has been a vocal critic of that decision, Durrant says he's being disrespectful, Smith says he couldn’t care less; touch paper lit, let tungsten fly this evening in a match Bully Boy can win.
They've already met in the group stage – Smith winning 5-3 last Friday – and now they meet again after nervy second-round wins on Wednesday night, Smith beating Daryl Gurney 10-7 while Durrant pipped Gabriel Clemens 10-9.
It was steely stuff from the Smoggie who has yet to produce his best darts in Wolverhampton – and he’ll have to step it up to keep tabs on the St Helens big-hitter.
Dave Chisnall's showdown with Peter Wright is another mouthwatering tussle between two men who have played four and won four.
Snakebite earned plaudits galore for battering Rob Cross 10-3 in the last 16, though Chizzy's 102 average in a hammering of Ryan Harrington by the same scoreline is just as worthy of respect. He also beat Cross in the group phase.
There doesn't look much between them but having plumped for Chisnall from the off this is no time to desert him.
