Preview

Defending champion Dimitri van den Bergh takes on Dave Chisnall on the first night of second-round action from the World Matchplay, although top of the bill at the Winter Gardens has to be the clash of the Welsh World Cup winners Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton.

Rob Cross v Callan Rydz

Callan Rydz came through a horrible Blackpool debut on Sunday but will surely produce better against former champion Rob Cross.

Rydz, a tour winner in 2021, showed none of that form against the off-colour Glen Durrant, whose own dismal form seemed to rub off on the youngster.

Voltage is showing signs of being back to his best and his consistency over the long best-of-21 format will be critical. One price which might tempt, however, is the 29-20 that Rydz hits most 180s – he averages a max every 3.9 legs on tour, Cross one every 4.5.

Luke Humphries v Krzyzstof Ratajski

Only three players hit ton-plus averages on Sunday's eight-game card and two of those meet here.

Luke Humphries touched three figures while crushing James Wade, avenging his loss at the Machine's hands in the UK Open final. The Pole nailed a 101.57 three-darter making light work of Brendan Dolan.

Super-smooth Cool Hand is the slight outsider here but that may not be merited.

Gerwyn Price v Jonny Clayton

Gerwyn Price has won each of his last four showdowns against World Cup partner and good pal Jonny Clayton, three of which could easily be described as hammerings. The most recent of those was on the floor, 7-1, last month.

World champ Price hasn't played a lot of stage stuff since Alexandra Palace and looked rusty against Jermaine Wattimena on Sunday but once he warmed to his task, he was solid enough.

Clayton, this year's Masters and Premier League winner, clearly has the form though you have to worry if has the mental strength to take on his fiery rival.

Dimitri van den Bergh v Dave Chisnall

It's hard to make a case for Chizzy at odds-on these days but he's always got a shock or two in him. Indeed, it's questionable if beating Dimitri van den Bergh would actually represent much of a surprise and certainly the man in yellow looks the shout at 6-4.

He played ever so well fending off a resilient Vincent van der Voort in his opener and while trusting Chizzy twice in a row these days is a gamble in itself, he still possesses the scoring power to trouble anyone.

Van den Bergh's good but hardly world-beating, especially based on some pretty scrappy stuff against an awful Devon Petersen on Saturday night.
