Stage 20 preview

Mark Cavendish will have to wait until Sunday's final stage on the Champs-Elysees if he is to win a record 35th Tour de France stage after Matej Mohoric won his second stage of this year's race from a breakaway into Libourne yesterday.

Cavendish, who maintained his advantage at the top of the points classification, finished alongside champion-in-waiting Tadej Pogacar in the peloton over 20 minutes behind Mohoric.

Given Pogacar's dominance of the race, little remains in play for Saturday's time trial other than a reordering of the minor placings.

The route is strikingly similar to that of the stage-five time trial, which Pogacar dominated, and few will bet against him capping his procession to Paris with a fourth stage success of this year's race.

If anyone can stop the Slovenian then Jumbo-Visma appear to have the best chance.

Jonas Vingegaard, third on stage five, should cement second place in the general classification with a decent showing against the clock, while Wout van Aert has got better as the race has gone on.

A winner of bunch sprints in previous Tours and on the double ascent of Mont Ventoux this year, Van Aert has shown there isn't much he can't do on a bike and time-trialling is another of the Belgian champion's fortes.

He opted against a tilt at the polka-dot jersey in the final week despite being well placed in that classification heading into the second rest day and may well have been targeting Saturday's stage.
