Preview

The North American hard-court season shifts up a gear this week with several big names strutting their stuff across four tournaments in Washington and San Jose in the US and Los Cabos, Mexico.

ATP number one Daniil Medvedev returns to competitive action at the Los Cabos Open and he's just 4-7 to claim the title in a draw lacking depth. Main rivals Cameron Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime are both drawn on the opposite side to the Russian.

Better bets can be had elsewhere beginning at an ultra-competitive ATP Citi Open, where Taylor Fritz is the pick to upstage number one seed Andrey Rublev and Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios in Washington DC.

Fritz is an improving performer who began to deliver on his immense talent when winning the Indian Wells title in March. He subsequently claimed another victory in Eastbourne before producing a career-best Grand Slam performance at Wimbledon, reaching the quarter-finals where he probably should have beaten Rafael Nadal.

He is capable of going far from a decent draw while the same is true of his fellow American Jessica Pegula, who is the number one seed in the women's event but plays second fiddle to Simona Halep in the betting.

Pegula is a rock-solid hard-court player, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of Indian Wells, losing out to genuine superstars in Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek.

Her only previous WTA title came in this tournament when it was last staged in 2019, and she can mark her long-awaited title defence by seeing off the likes of Halep, Emma Raducanu and Venus Williams.

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka is the star turn in a stacked WTA Silicon Valley Classic draw featuring five of the world's top eight players, but the Japanese is likely to need this outing having not played since the French Open.

Maria Sakkari reached the 2018 San Jose final and the semi-finals a year later in her only two tournament appearances and she's a better player now, making the last four of the 2021 US Open and the Indian Wells final in March. The Greek has been quiet of late but the switch to hard courts could bring about improvement.
