Going news, market movers and punting pointers for Goodwood and Galway

No talk of a 'duel on the Downs' this year ahead of the Qatar Sussex Stakes, but quietly this is still a battle of potential superstars.

It is 366 days since some declared the 2,000 Guineas a foregone conclusion when Expert Eye trounced the Vintage Stakes field. His reputation has bobbed on the waves since, but is unquestionably buoyed for now by his superb Jersey Stakes win.

Without Parole's career has been more plain sailing: four runs, four wins. The latest was the St James's Palace, a first Group race let alone a Group 1. Today's winner would become the (male) miler to beat in Europe.

In Ireland, the Galway Plate can be pitched as either the first skirmish of the inevitable Elliott-Mullins battle for the trainers' title, or a bit of Cheltenham score-settling. De Plotting Shed, Jury Duty (both Elliott) and Tully East were all fancied at the Festival, but either didn't fire, got unlucky or didn't make it at all.

The day's action elsewhere comes from Perth and Redcar in the afternoon and Sandown and Leicester in the evening.

Final thought

The Sussex is somewhat dependent on the real Expert Eye showing up, but under similar conditions to those he looked so impressive under last year, the chances have hopefully been maximised.
