Turner times it right as Onassis pays handsome tribute to late Noel Martin
There was a lot of emotion on display after Onassis and Hayley Turner added to their Royal Ascot success in the Listed Prix de Bagatelle – it was hard to know who to feel happiest for.
Sporting an Injured Jockeys Fund face mask, Turner was celebrating a major success just a week after returning from a dislocated shoulder. While, trainer Charlie Fellowes looks to have a Group-class filly on his hands after Onassis shot clear up the rail to put the race away in a matter of strides.
And as a daughter of the disqualified Qipco 1,000 Guineas winner Jacqueline Quest, Onassis struck just five days after the death of that filly's popular owner, Noel Martin.
Yet, for a while history looked set to play another cruel trick as the Chantilly stewards took almost ten minutes to analyse the route that Turner had taken to reach the front before allowing the result to stand, though she was handed a four-day ban for careless riding.
"I didn't have to hit her and I couldn't pull her up after the race, so I'm sure she's better than Listed class now. It's a wonderful result," said Turner. "It would have been a real shame for her to lose it. I'll take the four days."
"The Peter O'Sullevan House in Newmarket and the Injured Jockeys Fund really helped me to get back. I dislocated my collarbone and was back after three weeks, so it makes a big difference. I'm very lucky."
Turner returned from the saddle last Saturday and was registering her first success.
