Hollie Doyle ended 2016 in fine form and has not had to wait long for her first winner of 2017 as Jan Smuts came with a strong late run to prevail in a thrilling finish to the 2m½f handicap.

Medicine Hat and Sam James had repelled the challenges of Cavalieri, Hallstatt and Burnside, but had no answer to the charge of Jan Smuts and Doyle who, into a stiff headwind, were still in fifth place approaching the half-furlong pole.

The 5lb claimer enjoyed 15 winners in the final three months of last year and has now been on board the Wilf Storey-trained nine-year-old for his last two wins.
