A hole in a weight cloth cost Brian Boranha a first win in the 3m1½f handicap hurdle, with Brian Hughes weighing in 2lb light on the 11-4 favourite.

Hughes weighed out at 11st 12lb but weighed back in at 11st 10lb, and Brian Boranha's trainer Peter Niven explained what had been found after the race: "There was a hole in the lead cloth. There's four panels and Brian's quite light, so he had loads of lead. There were two or three in three panels, but there was nothing in the back one, and they always spread them evenly."
