Sheena West celebrated one of her biggest Flat successes as Fred Bear showed plenty of spirit to see off 15 rivals in the £25,000 final of the Bath Summer Stayers Series.

The 1m6f handicap had been switched to south Wales due to unsafe ground preventing racing at Bath.

Fred Bear started slowly but jockey Rose Dawes did not panic, sending the 16-1 shot to the front at the two-furlong pole and keeping him up to his work to score by two and a quarter lengths.

“We won a grassroots final race with Lyrica’s Lion but this success would be on a par with that and I’m delighted,” said West.

“We had planned to make the running but Rose used her brain after getting away slowly and it worked out perfectly.

“Fred Bear didn't run well over jumps last time at Fontwell and it might well be that he’s better on a flat track but also that he’s simply a better horse on the Flat.”

Greavsie scores

Three Tottenham Hotspur fans – Steve Piper, John Collins and Bob Pettis – were cheering after Greavsie, named in honour of legendary striker Jimmy Greaves, scored at 14-1 in the mile nursery.

Greavsie was ridden by winning trainer Jamie Osborne’s daughter Saffie, who later picked up a two-day ban for careless riding aboard With Pleasure after dead-heating for second in the feature race. The horse was demoted to third for causing interference.

Hot and bothered

Backers of 2-9 chance She’s Hot had some anxious moments before she got the better of Al Shami in the 7½f maiden. The winner was partnered by Rossa Ryan, who went on to complete a treble with victories aboard Hiromichi and Byron Hill.

Aidan Keeley, who had won the Cambridgeshire on Majestic the day before, escaped unscathed after being thrown to the ground when Mr Chua sustained a fatal injury in the 2m handicap.
