'This win is for him' - Joanna Mason picks up double on poignant day

It was an emotional day for Joanna Mason as she rode an 84-1 double following the death of her uncle on Wednesday morning, headlined by Copper And Five's narrow success in the mile handicap.

The Ruth Carr-trained five-year-old, who had won at Ripon and Doncaster earlier in the campaign, bounced back to his best and got the verdict by a short-head in a photo-finish under Mason, who dedicated that win to her family.

Mason told Racing TV: "He used to watch all my races and have £2.50 each-way on me, so this win is for him. He loved following me and when he was getting more unwell, we kept sending him videos and hopefully that kept him going."

On Copper And Five's success, she added: "I got stuck on the rail and we had to sit and wait but the gap was there once we were off it. It wasn't the easiest of runs, but he was as game as anything."

Mason completed her double when Pound Off You scored in division one of the 1m6f handicap.

In-form duo

Declan Carroll and Zak Wheatley's good form continued as the consistent Asmund finally got his head in front again in the 7f apprentice handicap.

The four-year-old had hit the frame in his previous five starts before his neck success and gave Wheatley a second winner in a row after he struck at Thirsk on Monday, while it was a third victory since Saturday for the trainer.
