Final Wincanton race abandoned as Major Charlie O'Shea is airlifted to hospital
Sunday: Wincanton
The concluding bumper at Wincanton was abandoned after two air ambulances were required for jockey Major Charlie O'Shea following his unseat in the 2m4f novice hunters' chase.
O'Shea was unseated from the Syd Hosie-trained Paudie at the second fence and officials at the track decided the 1m7f bumper, which was due to take place at 4.20, would not be run due to the medical treatment needed.
The amateur jockey was taken to Southmead hospital in Bristol following assessments from the medical team on the track and was conscious at the time.
Wincanton clerk of the course Daniel Cooper said: "Charlie unseated in the last race and received medical attention. The doctors wanted to focus on that and we only had a bumper to go, we felt we needed to focus on that with the medical resources we have here today.
"A second air ambulance was also in attendance and following assessment by the expert medical team on course, Charlie O'Shea was conscious and transported to Southmead Hospital.
"We extend our best wishes to Charlie and further updates will be provided by the Amateur Jockeys Association as soon as possible."
O'Shea has ridden five winners under rules, with the 2021-22 season his career-best so far with three victories that included the Royal Artillery Gold Cup and Grand Military Gold Cup on Rolling Dylan.
