La Lune shines in Nottinghamshire Oaks for delighted Henry Candy

La Lune produced a career-best performance to land the Listed Nottinghamshire Oaks for trainer Henry Candy.

The five-year-old mare bounced back to form after a disappointing end to last season to prevail in a tough battle to the line from Freyja.

“I am delighted,” said Candy. “She didn't do soft ground at the end of last year, and she’s older and stronger this year and has done very well over the winter; she’s looking great now.”

Decisions are yet to be made on her future. Candy hopes the mare will be able to stay in training before going to stud.

He said: “She will improve a little for the run today and we might look at a Group 3 next for her.”

Mostly, sent off the 13-8 favourite, proved a big disappointment under Frankie Dettori, beating just one rival home in seventh.

Double for Doyle

James Doyle kicked off a double on the card by winning the opening 5f novice stakes on Fabiosa.

Winning trainer David Evans said: “I was a little bit disappointed with her at Windsor, she ran a bit green. She’s come on from the run and did really well.

“We’ll probably go to York next to the Marygate and see what happens up there.”

Doyle followed up with a close-fought victory on Roman Mist for trainer Tom Ward in a four-way photo-finish to the fillies' 1m½f handicap.
