'I couldn't believe she drifted' - hot Hughes celebrates winner from abroad
Sunday: Windsor
The six furlong novice stakes for juvenile fillies looked a warm affair but the sun was already beating down on Richard Hughes, whose Song Of Success obliged at 7-1.
The Lambourn trainer, who was a three-time champion jockey during his riding career but also fancies himself as a tasty golfer, watched on from Portugal, where temperatures were on the rise.
"It's beautiful here and I might have a round of golf tomorrow, but it's a family holiday," said Hughes.
"I'm very grateful to Abdulla Al Mansoori, who owns Song Of Success. It's important for us to have a big owner like him in the yard. I'm surprised she walked in the market – she couldn't have done more than finish second on her debut.
"I know the second Sassy Belle had form with Trillium, who won the Molecomb at Goodwood, but she was beaten four lengths when they met at Newbury.
"Our filly drifted to 3-1 and then 7-1 and I couldn't believe it."
Andaleep on top
Lambourn trainers Daniel and Claire Kubler enjoyed a winner in the handicap for amateur jockeys, which Henry Main won on Andaleep.
The six-year-old, who is by Siyouni and runs in the colours of James Finch, raced prominently and picked up strongly to win by four lengths.
Second first
Tony Carroll was also in the winner's enclosure after favourite Second Collection landed the 5f handicap under Rossa Ryan.
The narrow success was the first of an across-the-cards double for the trainer, who also struck at Leicester with Eastern Star.
