Alan King's dual-purpose training skills were on full show here as he complemented another terrific winner at Goodwood with victory over the jumps as well, courtesy of hurdles debutant Caramelised in the 2m½f juvenile maiden hurdle.

The three-year-old had shown flashes of ability in four starts on the Flat for Richard Hannon and he took to his new discipline perfectly as he ran out a comfortable seven-length winner from Fred Bear.

Caramelised was bred and is part-owned by Anita Wigan, who revealed her step-son and co-owner Harry Wigan was the mastermind behind the switch.

She said: "I bred his dam Caster Sugar and every horse is special, but having a winner is extra special. I wasn't expecting him to be a hurdler, but this is what he's decided to like and be successful at. My stepson Harry thought he'd be a good hurdler so we sent him to Alan King and he was very right.

"It looked like he enjoyed it very much and he ran a few good races on the Flat, but he just needed a bit of distance. He's only been with Alan King for five weeks, but what a great trainer he is."

Snowden request pays off

Trainer Jamie Snowden praised the BHA's helpfulness in accommodating weight-for-age novice chases into the calendar after Some Day Soon ran out a dominant 17-length winner of the 2m5f novice chase.

Having voiced his frustrations on the topic in June, Snowden said: "The BHA were kind enough to put these races on after not programming them initially, and I think a race of this calibre proves that they are needed at this time of year and it was nice to see our lad run out such an impressive winner."
