David Bass celebrates 500th winner in Britain aboard Le Cameleon

David Bass has never been shy of fighting for the rights of his fellow riders and he was delighted to accept their congratulations as he notched his 500th winner in Britain.

The jockey reached the milestone with a typically determined effort to score aboard Le Cameleon in the 2m3½f handicap chase.

"There's been plenty of highlights over the years but I never really imagined I would get to anything like 500 winners and I'm delighted to get there," said Bass, who is jumps president of the Professional Jockeys' Association.

The 33-year-old secured his first success aboard Man From Highworth at Towcester in 2009 and in the early stages of his career guided Sprinter Sacre to victory on his chasing debut.

"I had all sorts of different ideas what I might do before becoming a jockey," Bass added. "I just hope I might have a good few more years in the sport yet.

"My aim would be to continue ride plenty of winners, especially with Kim Bailey, and stay up there at the highest level for as long as I can."

Welcome winner

Trainer Paul Henderson has found this season a struggle but landed a welcome success with Small Bad Bob in the 2m3f handicap hurdle.

Harry Cobden, riding for Henderson for the first time, bided his time before sending his mount to the front after the final flight to win by one and a quarter lengths.

"It's been a struggle for us this season," said Henderson. "A lot of my horses have not been suited to the gluey ground but I fancied my horse today. I thought he was overpriced at 14-1 and I managed to get on at 16-1.

"I've always rated Harry as a jockey and I used him as Tom O'Brien and Nick Scholfield weren't available. Harry showed plenty of patience on the horse and gave him an excellent ride."
