Three of Kerrin McEvoy's magical moments in Britain
Three-time Melbourne Cup winning rider Kerrin McEvoy's association with Godolphin is not a new one. The elite rider was previously employed as second-choice jockey to Frankie Dettori in Europe. Here are three of his highlights . . .
1 Rule Of Law - 2004 St Leger
It was a Classic in every sense of the word. After going agonisingly close to registering a first Derby success in the Godolphin blue but finding only North Light too good, Rule Of Law had unfinished business by the time the St Leger came around.
The colt, who had won the Great Voltigeur – the same race Cross Counter finished second in before winning the Melbourne Cup – on his previous start under Frankie Dettori, was sent straight to the front under McEvoy, who expertly dictated the pace, and from that moment on the pair were simply magic.
Kieren Fallon was aboard the other joint-favourite Quiff, who came to join Rule Of Law in the final furlong. The pair engaged in a ferocious tussle, two tenacious horses and two quality jockeys in full flight, but it was McEvoy who would come out on top, with just a head separating them at the line.
2 - 2005 St James's Palace Stakes
Beaten only once in a stellar seven-race career, Shamardal was something special, and arguably his finest moment was his final one.
Having won the Vintage and Dewhurst Stakes at two, Dettori was aboard for his narrow victories in the French 2,000 Guineas and French Derby.
McEvoy took over in the St James's Palace Stakes, which was run at York, and the pair produced a performance of pure poetry, making all and quickening clear to win in commanding style.
In the aftermath he said: "It was easy, he travelled well and when I saw a horse come to his girth and I let him quicken and away he went. I couldn't believe how far clear he was. I never gave him a smack."
3 Punctilious - 2005 Yorkshire Oaks
In just three rides, McEvoy built up a good relationship with Punctilious.
The talented but temperamental mare, who was third in Ouija Board's Oaks, disappointed when first paired with the rider, finishing seventh of eight when sent off favourite for the Lancashire Oaks.
She redeemed herself on her next start when dropped to Listed class at Newbury, staying on well to win by two lengths.
Group 1 company beckoned again at York, where she was sent off at 13-2. After starting slowly, McEvoy asked her for her effort in the straight and she stayed on strongly to hold Dash To The Front at bay.
